Royal Decameron Fun in Runaway Bay, Jamaica

7 Jul

If you are flying in to Montego Bay and looking for a hotel near the airport, this is not one to choose. Located an hour east of the airport is the Royal Decameron Fun. It is all inclusive, as are most resorts in Jamaica. We were greeted with rum punch at check in and whisked right on up to our rooms. 2 seconds after the bell hop left us in the room there was a knock on the door. It was the bell hop again asking to speak with my brother. Um, okay. It didn’t take 2 seconds to realize that he was trying to sell some weed. WELCOME TO JAMAICA, MON!

The grounds of Royal Decameron Fun are beautiful and well-kept. The trim on each hotel building vary from bright orange to Caribbean blue to purple. The open air lobby always had someone readily available to assist you if needed. There are several pools to choose from. The main pool has a water park quality water slide which was quite fun. At least 2 of the pools had a convenient swim up bar, with other tables and chairs in the water.

The rooms are quite interesting. There is a mirror above the bed and a mirror above the jetted tub. The jetted tub was a nice surprise for a standard room. You may hear some outdoor noise from the open air bathroom. The shutters in the bathroom stay open, so keep your bathroom door closed at night. The air conditioning in the room was nice and cold. Keep it on all day so when you go back to your room it will be nice and cold!

I had a hard time getting shampoo. You are not provided any and I asked housekeeping at least 3 times in the first 24 hours. I finally gave up and bought the $4 USD bottle from the gift shop.

The gift shop is nice, has a good selection. It would be beneficial to buy a bottle of water from there to keep in your room for the night.

The food was mediocre at best. Even the specialty restaurants, which served Hibachi style Japanese and Italian, were quite bland to me. However, it was edible most of the time and if you didn’t like something you didn’t feel obligated to eat it. I find it had to complain about “free” food. The French toast at breakfast was the best and if you are expecting bacon and scrambled eggs (and I was), forget about it. The breakfast was about the same each morning and the lunch and dinner had slight variations.

The beach was small and rocky. Bring water shoes. Another guest said that the sister resort had better food and I’ve also read that it has a better beach. Unfortunately, we didn’t have time to see for ourselves.

Be prepared to pay for Wi-Fi. However, I somehow got it for free one night while sitting by the main pool outside the lobby. Also, the in-room safe is an extra charge.

For a cheap getaway, and the opportunity to visit Jamaica, the price was worth it. I learned a lot about the island and its people, which for me is the most interesting part of international travel.
